Ethical Issues faced in Human Resource

Ethics in H.R.M.

Human resource management deals with manpower planning and development related activities in an organization. Arguably it is that branch of management where Ethics really matter, since it concerns human issues specially those of compensation, development, industrial relations and health and safety issues.

Ethical issues faced in H.R. are:

1. Employment Issues
2. Cash and Incentive Plans
3. Employees Discrimination
4. Performance Appraisal
5. Privacy
6. Safety and Health
7. Restructuring and Layoffs

Jet Airways Case ( Job Safety and Unemployment)

'Joy of flying'
 I I
Jet Airways shut down its operations on 17th April 2019. The shutting down of the company affected their 20,000 employees and more than 70,000 to 75,000 people indirectly. Jet Airways was second largest airline by passengers till January 2019 in the domestic market and was also flying more passengers than national carrier Air India to overseas destinations from India.

The company is reportedly in a debt of Rs. 8,000 crores. State Bank of India, the lead lender and biggest state run bank has planned to change the management and stake sale in the beleaguered airline have opted for calling Expression of Interest.

Starbucks Dyslexia Case (Discrimination)

Starbucks employee Meseret Kumulchew was accused of fraud as her employer claimed she was falsifying documents after she mistakenly entered incorrect information when recording fridge temperatures in a duty roster. As a result, she was given less duties, taking away significant parts of her supervisory position and was told she needed to retrain before she could continue with those responsibilities which made up the job she likes.

In an interview, Meseret expressed that she was made to feel like a fraud and was on the verge of wanting to commit suicide. The only thing that stopped her was the thought of her children.

Meseret took Starbucks to an employment tribunal for Disability discrimination as she stated the she had been upfront with her employees from the start, telling them that she was Dyslexic which means that she has difficulties with writing, reading and telling the time. She also told them that she is a visual learner, meaning that she needs to be practically shown how to complete a task in order to learn/execute.

The tribunal found that Starbucks failed to make reasonable adjustments for Meseret and had discriminated against her due to the effects of her Dyslexia. It was found that she was victimized by her employer and that there appeared to be little or no knowledge or understanding of equality issues with the Business.
